ICE quietly shifts away from ankle monitors, releases Springfield pastor

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WCMH) — Immigration advocates were temporarily optimistic in Springfield Thursday, announcing an unofficial decrease in the use of ankle monitors and the release of a Haitian pastor from ICE detention.

“It’s a big relief for the Haitian community because that thing, the ankle monitor, is — or was — very humiliating,” advocate Obed Benjamin Louis said. “So right now we are feeling hope.”

Advocates with Haitian support groups credited weeks of protests in the release of Haitian Springfield Pastor Joubert Adrien from ICE custody. Advocates also said public attention toward ICE placing ankle monitors on Haitians appears to have slowed the program, with many Haitians now being offered an app for virtual check-ins instead.
